Personhood & Worldview

Personhood is the canvas upon which our unique self-governing centers paint the masterpiece of our existence, as we navigate through life's ever-changing landscapes, shaped by the brushstrokes of new experiences and the vibrant hues of our cultural background.

My own personal experiences growing up in Rio de Janeiro, one of the most dangerous cities in the world, have shaped my perspective on life's complexities and informed my work in psychotherapy. Despite the early exposure to struggles that some might consider horrifying, I have developed a resilience that has become an integral part of my identity, permeating all areas of my life, including my relationships and self-worth.

During my transition into adolescence, I embarked on a personal journey to better understand my neurodiversity. I also experienced the impact of others' judgments during this period. However, it was during this challenging time that I faced significant changes in my life, including relocating to a different country. This journey of self-acceptance has ultimately led me to develop a greater sense of self-awareness and embrace my unique qualities.

Growing up in a Catholic family that often experienced chaos, I never fully embraced the label of being a devout Catholic. However, as I transitioned into adulthood, I started to explore different belief systems and ideologies. These spiritual and religious explorations have allowed me to engage in thought-provoking conversations and have enriched my understanding of myself and others.

I have encountered various challenges that have put my strengths to the test. These challenges have included traumatic events and the experience of loss. However, in spite of these obstacles, I have discovered an inner strength that has motivated me to persevere. Through these experiences, I have also developed a deep sense of empathy. Observing the incredible resilience that resides within us and acknowledging the vast potential for positive change has truly opened my eyes.

I have come to realize that personal growth goes beyond just self-awareness. It involves immersing oneself in different cultures and traditions. Through living and traveling to countries like Brazil, India, Belgium, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, I have gained valuable insights into the complexities of the human experience. Moreover, transitioning from my previous career as an accountant to psychology has had a significant impact on my personal development. Motivated by a strong belief in the power of developing effective skills in managing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, I am driven to facilitate internal change and growth.

Who Am I?

While science and logic have undoubtedly made significant advancements in understanding the objective world, they fall short when it comes to unravelling the intricacies of human emotions, beliefs, and values. Our subjectivity is shaped by a myriad of factors, including cultural upbringing, personal biases, and individual experiences, making it a complex and multifaceted aspect of our being that goes beyond the confines of scientific inquiry. I am a complex human being with both strengths and flaws, and I have many roles, such as son, brother, roommate, student, therapist, and a friend seeking to be present and supportive to those I cherish. Depending on how you see it, I have the potential to take on any of these roles, but my true essence remains elusive, existing in a realm beyond the tangible.

However, I possess a natural inclination towards helping others, driven by my empathy and insight. It took me some time to realize that empowering others to transform their lives is my true passion. I am a curious person who loves to learn, whether it is about theories or different cultures. Understanding diverse perspectives brings me immense joy. Although there is always more to learn, this process makes me feel alive. My journey has been complex, and while some parts have been difficult, I have emerged stronger and more grateful. At the end of the day, I am just another human being trying my best to walk through life with courage and compassion.

What do I Believe About Myself in the World?

I believe, I have an important purpose to be a helper and source of hope for others. The world is filled with suffering, tragedy, and deep wounds. I feel called to be the light that helps individuals heal and transform their pain into growth. Though I cannot solve all the world's problems, I can make a meaningful difference in my corner of it.

I value the importance of human connection, recognizing that despite our differences, there are more things that unite us than divide us. I strive to find common ground with individuals from all walks of life, promoting empathy, compassion, and understanding in my relationships and community.

Although I acknowledge the darkness in the world, I remain hopeful and refuse to give up on the potential for good. I have faith in people's capacity to change and desire to improve, believing that wholeness is possible with patience and caring support. My journey towards personal growth is ongoing, and I am committed to living with wisdom while remaining aware of my flaws and blind spots. I believe that an open and curious mind allows me to constantly evolve into the best version of myself. At my core, I have faith in the strength of the human spirit. As long as we are alive, we have the ability to heal, transform, and make each moment a little brighter. My role is to nurture that light in others. This is what I believe about myself in this beautifully messy world we share.

Who am I as a Helper?

I have faith in the inherent goodness that resides within every individual, irrespective of their background or circumstances. By actively listening, I provide undivided attention and create a space where people feel acknowledged and truly understood. With empathy and compassion as my guiding principles, I offer valuable guidance to help individuals overcome challenges and seize opportunities. In times of emotional turmoil and chaos, I assume the role of a composed and comforting presence, offering support. I strive to reflect and amplify people's strengths, instilling hope, courage, and confidence in them. While I may not possess all the answers, I am always ready to lend my support with an open heart and a gentle spirit, assisting others on their journey towards healing.

As I reflect on the complexity of my own subjectivity, the significance of my personal growth, and my role as a helper; I acknowledge the limitations of scientific methods in fully grasping my emotions, beliefs, and values. I firmly believe in the inherent goodness within each individual and strive to be a source of hope and empowerment for others. I highly value human connection, empathy, and compassion, and I remain hopeful about the potential for goodness in the world. Through active listening, guidance, and reflection of strengths, I aim to assist individuals on their journey towards healing. These reflections served as a reminder of the beautiful yet messy nature of life and the importance of nurturing the light within myself and others.

Worldview Orientation

My approach to understanding the world is informed by various ideologies, such as social constructivism, existentialism, and relativism. I believe in approaching conversations and debates with an open mind and a willingness to learn from others, rather than imposing my own beliefs. I strive to understand and appreciate the diversity of human experience, recognizing that there are many different ways to interpret truth. By embracing this mindset, I aim to create an environment of mutual respect and open-mindedness, which fosters productive and meaningful discussions.

I am aware that through active listening and genuine curiosity, I can uncover new perspectives and challenge my own preconceived notions. This approach not only enriches my understanding of the world but also fosters empathy and compassion towards others, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and tolerant society.

I believe that open-mindedness and curiosity not only expand knowledge but also encourage empathy towards different viewpoints, fostering an environment of respect and understanding among peers. In contrast, closed-mindedness and a disinterest in exploring new ideas can create an echo chamber where individuals only surround themselves with like-minded individuals. This can further solidify existing biases and limit one's ability to critically evaluate information or engage in productive discourse. Ultimately, embracing open-mindedness and curiosity not only leads to personal growth but also plays a vital role in fostering a diverse and inclusive atmosphere where ideas can be challenged, shared, and refined.

I incorporate a range of philosophical perspectives, including social constructivism and existentialism, into my worldview. However, I am not limited to these perspectives alone. I recognize that reality is subjective and shaped by our experiences and ideas. I appreciate the diversity of events and ideas that contribute to our understanding of reality, which leads to a comprehensive and inclusive worldview that encompasses realism, fundamentalism, existentialism, and other significant perspectives. My worldview is not restricted by any specific framework, allowing it to be eclectic and adaptable.

I believe that embracing a diverse range of perspectives allows me to see the world in a more nuanced and empathetic way. By acknowledging the limitations of my own viewpoint, I can engage in meaningful conversations that challenge my preconceived notions and broaden my understanding of reality. This eclectic worldview also enables me to appreciate the complex and multifaceted nature of human existence, ultimately fostering a greater sense of compassion and unity among individuals with different beliefs and experiences.

Activismctivis

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
Anne Frank

Activism involves taking action with the intention of bringing about change in various areas that require immediate attention, such as homophobia, sexism, racism, animal cruelty, tuition costs, financial insecurity for students, mental health, human trafficking, sexual assault, poverty reduction, and migrant labor exploitation. It is a means of putting out the flames when the world is on fire.

Saving the life of even one animal may not change the world, but it can undoubtedly change the life of that animal. Despite the fact that the world can be a depressing place, we should never underestimate the value of our good deeds. We can start small and work our way up, as activism is a gradual process that improves the world one step at a time. Random acts of kindness are just one aspect of this process.

Race/Ethnicity

Heading 2

Recognizing and embracing one's race and ethnicity can bring a sense of belonging and understanding of one's cultural heritage. However, it is essential to acknowledge the unfortunate history of discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes that have been associated with both race and ethnicity.
"Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by the sense of Universal responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human, but also human to other forms of life"
-Dalai Lama
